About Eye Care and Research Centre

Eye Care & Research Centre is a not for profit social service organisatiion, a society registered under West Bengal Societies Registration Act. The Centre is committed to cater quality eye care services to the poor and middleclass people at affordable cost and thereby prevent blindness and visual impairment.

During more than three decades of its existence, the Eye Care & Research Centre has established itself as a pioneering institute in Kolkata in rendering eye care services to the people of Eastern India.

The spontaneous support and patronage of people in general for the growth and progress of the Centre is overwhelming. The most noteworthy support came from the old freedom fighters of bygone days who allowed the Centre to use its premises ‘Biplabi Niketan’ which was given to them by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for their use. The Centre is proud to have the following well equipped clinics which serve on all working days from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. : General Ophthalmic, Vitreous & Retina, Glaucoma, Squint & Amblyopia, Laser & FFA, Ultrasonography, Contact Lens, Oculoplasty, Neuro Ophthalmology, Cornea, Diabetic, Low Visual Aid and special clinics, Rotary Platinum Jubilee Operation Theatre Complex comprises three well equipped modern operation theatres where almost all operations in the eye are performed daily by the well trained surgeons of the Centre.

For the benefit of young patients of our pediatric unit, a full-fledged exclusive 'Eye Care Centre for Children' was opened at our new premises at IMA House, 1st Floor at 11/3, Dr. Biresh Guha Street during the Silver Jubilee Year in 2009.

For dissemination of proper scientific knowledge amongst the local ophthalmologists, the Centre launched the Calcutta Academy of Ophthalmology in 1991. In 2008, the Academy merged wkth "Kolkata Academy of Ophthalmology" which is currently being looked after by Eye Care & Research Centre jointly with B.B. Eye Foundation, Kolkata. The Academy holds regular CME programmes, workshops and conferences.

The Centre encourages research activities by its medical staff. Many papers have so far been presented in various national and international seminars/ conferences with the appreciation of all.

The School of Optometry of Eye Care & Research Centre is recognised for D.Opt. Course of the State Medical Faculty of West Bengal.

The Centre has been accredited by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi for training of Students for DNB programme.
