In 1984 a few social workers and medical volunteers of Calcutta established the much needed 'Eye Care & Research Centre'. The centre with its modern and up-to-date facilities and equipments mainly acquired through public donations, in no time established itself as a centre of excellence in eye care in eastern India. Besides delivering proper eye care services to suffering people, it also imparts teaching and training to young ophthalmologists through Calcutta Academy of Ophthalmology, different workshops, refresher courses, CME programmes, etc.

Eye Care & Research Centre is really the trend setter in ophthalmic care in this part of the country and many good institutions in and around Kolkata have lately come up which are helping to bring back the old glory of Kolkata in eye care.

The centre is proud of its well equipped operation theatre complex and a 15 bed capacity indoor. Trained specialist doctors in-charge of all ophthalmic sub specialities examine patients in fully equipped clinics. The auxilliary staff serves with efficiency and dedication.
